A guide to start solo traveling after quarantine

Many countries are already opening up and tourism slowly starts rolling again. Sure, it will take time till we can travel as we used to again, but what’s clear is that we will travel again.

I’m sure many of you have that one destination in mind that you always wanted to see or just that feeling of Wanderlust. Whatever reason it is that you want to go travel - there must be a reason you didn’t do it yet, right? Well, maybe it’s money, a job, school, or just the personal situation you’re in, but maybe it’s also because nobody wants to come with you?

Explore the world on your own! You can still come back to make memories together with others, but if you so desperately want to see the world - go for it. Stop waiting. I totally understand if you’re scared of heading out on your own, but this shouldn’t hold you back on fulfilling your dreams.

Here are five reasons why solo traveling is awesome!

  • You’ll get to know yourself better.
  • You are more flexible on your journey.
  • You’ll be more open to meet new people.
  • You’ll experience things more intense.
  • It’s empowering.

How do I start?

There are three things you need to sort out - money, time and destination. If you already know where you want to go you just need to plan the time and length of your trip and you can start with your money plan. If you don’t have a specific destination in mind yet, I’d recommend to either figure out for how long you can be abroad and plan a route or choose a country that fits your needs in what you want to do or see on that trip. Or maybe you have time and a plan but no money? Then you can start with the savings right away. Traveling is expensive so it’s important to know your budget before you head out.

What do I need to know before traveling on my own?

Your budget - like I mentioned above. It’ll keep you from overspending or underspending, which is especially important on longer trips. You should also do your research on the country you’re going to visit. Maybe learn some basic words in the spoken language. Regarding on your situation or the length of your trip there are also things to consider like: Who cares for your plants or pets? What do you do with your flat? (If you live on your own and will be away for several months for example) Do I need to get any required vaccination?

You should also keep in mind that solo travel is not always and only fun - there can be tough days, but those are the ones that’ll make you grow. You should know that you’re responsible for yourself and should prepare for that and bring any necessities you might need to feel comfortable.
Also, keep in mind that you can't run away from problems! If there's anything that bothers you it will most likely not fade away while you're on the road!

Where should I go?

Maybe you find it easier to start with a trip to a country in which culture is similar to your own so you won’t be overwhelmed right away. Solo travel is an adventure itself, but even a much bigger if you go to a whole different continent. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! It’s totally possible, maybe you just want to keep this in mind whilst your decision process. If you travel on a budget it’s good to look out for countries that are considered cheap or are less touristy.

On the internet you'll find much information on countries that are considered very safe for female solo travelers!

But what if you don’t even know if solo travel fits for you? Why not go on a trip within your own country?
You can visit the next big city to do some sightseeing and explore cute spots. That would be a great start and you can get a feeling of what it means to travel on your own without having to go far away!

How do I stay safe?

There are a lot of tips on how to stay safe as a female solo traveller. From not going out at nights to wearing a fake wedding ring. I think what’s most important is to do your research on the place you’re going to, so you know what to expect. The best tips I read and live by are using your common sense and trusting your gut feeling, not looking lost in public and just (pretending) to be confident! Also, keep an eye on your belongings, don’t leave them unattended and don’t walk around with big amounts of cash. Depending on the place don’t show off your valuables.

What if I’ll get lonely?

Chances are high that you WILL get lonely. But that’s not a bad thing - you’ll find ways to overcome it and grow stronger. If you need to see and talk to other people group tours are a great way to do so! If you miss your loved ones shoot them a message, write a letter or simply call them! You’ll see that your loneliness won’t last for long and it will soon fade away. And if not, if all you want to do is go home that’s totally fine! You can book a flight home at any time!

How should I travel?

This fully depends on your needs. Backpacking is super cool but if you want to bring more stuff feel free to bring a suitcase if that’s what you prefer. If you love socializing the best place to stay are hostels! They also have private rooms, so you have your own space and can still meet other travellers at dinner, events or in the common room. Airbnb allows you to stay with locals which is a great way to get to know the country and their people! You can even travel with a van or go interrailing - there are so many options!

What if I’m not "that kind of person"?

You don’t need to fit with the image of the ideal solo traveller to be one! We’re all different and grow at our own rates - that’s what you can focus on when you’re on your own. No one has any expectations or opinions about you when you’re abroad, because no one knows you yet. That’s your chance to be the person you want to be, the person you are when you’re completely free from outer influences and that is really amazing!
